How to... Set up a panic button on your child's phone

Almost all cell phones can be used as a panic button.  In an emergency your child can then send you a distress SMS with his/her current location.  The following table looks at How to activate four popular Panic Button Applications on your child’s phone:

VODACOM (Look4Help)

MTN (2MyAid)

  1.  Register online (www.look4help.co.za) and follow the instructions to set up emergency contacts and profiles.
  2. Save the Lookhelp™ panic number (*120*888*888#) to speed dial on your child’s phone.
  3. When the panic button is activated, a distress SMS, with your location is sent to four emergency contacts, as specified by you. 

COST:  R12.70 per month

BEST ACCURACY: 150metres

  1. To register SMS the word ‘Help’ to 31911.
  2. You will receive an SMS confirming your registration & follow the instructions to set up emergency contacts and profiles.
  3. When the panic button is activated, a distress SMS with your location, is sent to four emergency contacts, as specified by you. Thereafter, your emergency contacts will also be able to request updated location information for a period of time.

COST:  R12.49 per month

iPHONE and ANDROID only
Red Panic Button Application

BLACKBERRY (SmrtGuard)

Download the Red Panic Button applications on your child’s phone and follow the steps below to activate:

Android:

  1. Turn your mobile GPS on.
  2. Go to the Red Panic Button App.
  3. Select ‘contacts’.
  4. Select ‘new number’, enter the desired contact number you want to add and select ‘OK’.
  5. Select ‘preferences menu’ and add desired features, such as the e-mail panic custom messages and the emergency number.

iPhone:

  1. Go to the Red Panic Button App.
  2. Approve the request to access GPS.
  3. Create panic information profile by entering your child’s first and last name.
  4. Select ‘contacts’.
  5. Select ‘new entry’, enter the desired contact number or email you want to add and select ‘OK’.
  6. Push the Red Panic Button and the application will send an SMS and email with a link to Google Maps with your GPS coordinates.

COST:  Free

BEST ACCURACY: 10 metres

  1. Launch the Snap Secure application.
  2. Select the ‘Personal Guardian menu’ option. If you click ‘yes’, you will be directed to the Screen/Keyboard Preference screen to update one of the convenience keys to ‘nothing’.  
  3. Go back to the Snap Secure application and click on the ‘Personal Guardian menu’ option.
  4. Select ‘phone contact’, if you want to call a specified number OR select ‘SMS contact’, if you wish to SMS the specified number OR select ‘Email contact’, if you wish to send a distress email to the specified email address.
  5. Press ‘escape’ to go back to the Personal Guardian page and ‘escape’ again to save your Personal Guardian settings.

Personal Guardian is triggered by holding down the left or right convenience key for a specified time frame. The BlackBerry will vibrate when the signal is sent and the Application will send an SMS and Email with a link to Google Maps with your GPS coordinates.
