How to... disable Mxit Chat Rooms

Often the simplest things like protecting our children can be an overwhelming task, especially with technology constantly evolving, offering new services, but also increasing the dangers our children are exposed to. Cellphone Safety has put together a quick How to guide to help keep children safe online and we will be showcasing the following on Parents Corner:

  1. Disable Mxit Chatrooms,
  2. Disable the internet on a mobile phone,
  3. Set up a panic button on your childs mobile phone

How to disable Mxit Chat Rooms:

Mxit is an application that works on most cell phones and it is a very affordable way to chat to friends.  The danger comes in when your child makes use of the Chat Zones where he/she can encounter a number of strangers and topics that are not desirable for children under the age of 18 years.  Fortunately, Mxit has created a tool that allows parents to block any access to Mxit Chat Zones.

To enable this tool, follow these steps:

  1. Open up Mxit on your child’s phone, go to the main menu and select ‘info’
  2. Select Option 8 ‘chat safe’;
  3. Select Option 3 ‘chat zone block’;
  4. Select Option 4 ‘block chat zones’;
  5. Enter & re-enter a password (one that your child will not think of);
  6. Enter a password retrieval question & answer;
  7. Select ‘proceed’ to confirm the block;
  8. You will now see a status message, ‘chat zones are blocked’;

Now, when your child tries to enter a Chat Zone, the following message will appear on their screens: “Sorry, Chat Zones are blocked.  Go to Info->Chat Zone security to unblock”
